DPI explained

What does DPI actually change?

DPI (dots per inch) is a setting stored inside an image file that tells printers and apps how big to print it. It does not change the number of pixels or the quality. A 3000 × 3000 px image is the same at 72 DPI or 300 DPI — but at 300 DPI it prints at 10 × 10 inches by default instead of 41 × 41.

Many buyers of printables and clipart check the DPI and expect to see 300. Setting it correctly avoids confused messages and makes your files open at the right size in Canva, Photoshop and Cricut Design Space.

Need bigger prints? If your image doesn't have enough pixels for the size you want, changing the DPI won't help — start with a larger file. To create every frame ratio at 300 DPI, use the wall art print size generator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does changing DPI reduce quality?

No. This tool only changes the DPI value stored in the file. Pixels, colours and compression are untouched.

What DPI should printables be?

300 DPI is the standard for high-quality printing. 150 DPI can be fine for large posters viewed from a distance.

Which file types work?

PNG and JPG. The tool updates the PNG pHYs chunk or the JPEG JFIF and EXIF resolution.
